Event Description

Smallhythe Place, former home to Victorian Actress, Dame Ellen Terry is an early 16th-century house, with beautiful cottage gardens and a 17th-century Barn Theatre.
There's lots going on at Smallhythe Place this April, with new exhibitions, colourful spring gardens and shows in the historic Barn Theatre, there is something for everyone.

Dressing Miss Terry (Wed-Sun, 11am-5pm)
An exhibition exploring the part played by Ellen Terry's unique theatrical costumes during her 60-year long acting career and her collaboration with designers, dressmakers and dressers. It will also examine complex processes involved in preserving and conserving unique theatrical garments in order to exhibit them. The sumptuous costumes of Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing, worn by Ellen Terry and Henry Irving in the 1880s will be on display for the first time following recent conservation. Spring Hotspots Nature Trail (Wed-Sun, 11am-5pm)
In its spring glory, there is a lot to discover in the gardens at Smallhythe Place. Take a trail sheet from visitor reception and guide yourself around the garden on an adventure, who knows what you might see. (Free)

An Actresses Wardrobe (Sat 4th Apr, 1.15pm)
Join a costume tour and delve into the store for a peek of the delicate and lavish costumes once worn by Ellen Terry and her actor friends. With fascinating stories attached to each garment, costume tours are an opportunity to discover a rich theatrical history. (Tickets: £5)

Cadbury Easter Egg Hunts (10th-13th Apr, 11am-3pm)
Get ready for a weekend of fun and discovery as you spot the first signs of spring at the amazing places the National Trust looks after. Become a nature detective and finish your adventure with a chocolate treat from Cadbury. (£3 per trail)

Dad's Army, Radio Show (17-19th Apr, 7.30pm)
Perry and Croft’s classic BBC sitcom brought gloriously to life. Two actors, two microphones and over twenty-five characters. The nation’s favourite sitcom returns in this highly-acclaimed production. (Tickets: £17.50)

Tai Chi in the garden (Sat 25th Apr, 11.30am)
Join us for gentle exercise, mental relaxation and fresh air with an hour of Tai Chi in the tranquil gardens of Smallhythe Place. Concentrating on correct posture and breathing, experience the fluid, graceful and well balanced movements of Tai Chi which promote harmony of body and mind. (Free)
